Guatemala is a land of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and ancient history. From the serene waters of Lake Atitlán to the ruins of Tikal, this itinerary takes you through some of the most beautiful and fascinating places in the country. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, this journey has something for everyone. Here's how we spent our incredible time in Guatemala.

Day 1-3: San Marcos La Laguna – Lush Atitlán and Lake Exploration

Our adventure began in San Marcos La Laguna, a small, peaceful village on the shores of Lake Atitlán. After a scenic drive and boat taxi ride from Panajachel, we arrived at Lush Atitlán, a tranquil oasis surrounded by lush jungle and offering breathtaking views of the lake. The accommodation was everything we had hoped for—rustic luxury with nature right at our doorstep.

San Marcos is known for its spiritual vibe, yoga retreats, and holistic healing centers, but there’s plenty to explore beyond that. We spent our days wandering the narrow streets, browsing the local markets filled with handmade crafts and textiles, and trying delicious local food. The laid-back atmosphere of the village made it easy to unwind.

One of the highlights of our stay was taking the boat taxi (Q25, about $3 USD per person) to visit other villages around the lake. Each one has its own unique charm.

Travel Tip: Bring plenty of small bills in local currency (quetzales), as some of the smaller towns around the lake don’t always have ATMs or accept credit cards.

Day 4-6: Antigua – A Step Back in Time

After our peaceful stay in San Marcos, we headed to Antigua, Guatemala’s colonial gem. We took a private taxi from Lake Atitlán to Antigua (roughly a 3-hour drive), and the ride was smooth and scenic. Our driver was incredibly kind and professional, making us feel comfortable and safe throughout the journey.

Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s easy to see why. The city’s cobblestone streets are lined with colorful colonial buildings, and you’re never far from a view of the surrounding volcanoes. We spent our time here visiting the many historical landmarks, including the famous Santa Catalina Arch and the ruins of old cathedrals. We also wandered through the bustling local markets, where you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade jewelry.

While Antigua is a bit more touristy than San Marcos, it has an undeniable charm, and it’s a great place to base yourself for a few days. Don’t miss the chance to try local Guatemalan dishes like pepián (a hearty chicken stew) at one of the many cafes in town.

Day 7-9: Tikal National Park – Ancient Ruins and Jungle Adventures

From Antigua, we took a short flight to Flores, the gateway to Tikal National Park, home to some of the most impressive Mayan ruins in the world. After landing, we took a private taxi to our accommodation inside the park—Hotel Tikal Inn. Staying inside the park was a game-changer, allowing us to experience both the sunrise and sunset tours at the ruins.

Our guide in Tikal was fantastic—knowledgeable, fun, and passionate about the history of the Mayan civilization. The sunset tour took us through the jungle, where we spotted wildlife like howler monkeys and colorful birds. The grand finale was climbing Temple IV to watch the sun set over the ancient city, with the sounds of the jungle echoing in the background. The sunrise tour was equally magical, as we hiked in the early morning mist to the top of the temples and watched the world come to life.

Tikal is vast, and having a guide really helped us make the most of our time there. He shared fascinating stories about the ancient Maya and pointed out hidden details in the ruins that we would have otherwise missed.

Travel Tip: The Tikal Inn offers guided sunrise and sunset tours, and I highly recommend both for a full experience. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, plenty of water, and insect repellent!

Safety and Solo Travel in Guatemala: Throughout our trip, we felt safe and well taken care of, especially with the help of our private drivers. While Guatemala is often misunderstood when it comes to safety, we had a positive experience and met plenty of friendly locals and fellow travelers. One thing that surprised me was meeting a number of solo female travelers along the way, especially in places like Antigua and Lake Atitlán. Many of them told me they felt safe exploring Guatemala on their own, which is encouraging if you're considering solo travel. While I personally wouldn’t opt for solo travel here, it’s good to know that others had a positive experience.

Travel Tip: If safety is a concern, booking private taxis or shuttles is a great option. Our drivers were not only professional but also very informative, and having private transport gave us peace of mind.

From the tranquil shores of Lake Atitlán to the bustling streets of Antigua and the awe-inspiring ruins of Tikal, Guatemala left a lasting impression on us. This trip offered the perfect mix of nature, culture, and adventure, with each destination bringing something unique to the table. Whether you're an avid history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Guatemala has something to offer.

With its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and warm, welcoming people, Guatemala is a destination that truly has it all.
